“No Interface is the Best Interface”

“No Interface is the Best Interface”

With the dawn of the NO-UI design, at long last, it is now time to bid farewell to the need for constant visual interactions with the device.

“No Interface is the best Interface”, these words have tolled in my mind like ceaseless, unfading echoes since the day my manager, Head of Product Design, uttered them. It evoked pleasant memories of the olden days within me whilst working with Nokia. With the little knowledge my mind bore, I had mused over what that sentence truly meant; could it even be possible?

As designers or developers as makers of technology, we are solving the problems of tomorrow in the most elegant and intuitive ways possible. Our research allows us to identify new and unique problems to solve. Our creative drive to discover what motivates our customers is a fantastic way to start. Ever since the mighty invention of computing devices around us, we seem to have always required some sort of interface to engage with. Computers too were designed in compliance with human mental models. Working on myriad projects time after time, in different organizations on umpteen products, my intellect gathered the emerging technologies to be designed and developed, circling around a familiar pattern of “NO-GUI” where we interact with objects around us with either minimal graphical interface or no interface buttons or actions whatsoever. Want to know the time or listen to your favorite song? Just ask your friendly black box! When you walk towards a closed door, one vocal command of “Open Door” will immodestly recognize your voice pattern and magically unlock the door.

Empowering the New World of Ai

Advancements in machine learning methods, a process where the computer is taught to understand and solve a problem by itself, rather than having engineers code complex solutions. Smart computer devices can hear, see, sense, read us and understand human behaviors, better than ever before, opening a new world of unlimited opportunities for AI-powered apps, reducing the dependency on graphical interfaces, increasingly making designing traditional GUI irrelevant.
